Sustainability

We’re dedicated to protecting the environment while crafting the finest quality ice cream and providing fun days out for all the family

Happy Cows

Our small , extensive micro herd of dairy cows happily graze our fields for as much of the year as possible, coming in to be milked whenever they feel like it, through our Robotic milking machine.

At every milking they receive a basic health check and our vet visits them monthly to ensure that they remain in good condition. Our Dairy Farm is Red Tractor Farm Assured- an accreditation scheme ensuring a high level of herd health and welfare.

Self Sufficiency

Self Sufficiency, Home Grown food to reduce food miles

Each year, we grow acres of wheat, barley, and grass directly on our farm to provide our cows with a constant supply of nutritious feed. By cultivating these crops on-site, we significantly reduce food miles and minimize our carbon footprint. This sustainable approach not only ensures our cows produce the freshest, highest-quality milk, but also supports our commitment to creating exceptional ice cream with a lower environmental impact.

Soil health

Keeping the land good for future generations

Regenerative farming methods are used to look after our soils and provide us with healthy crops by:

  • The growth of herbal leys to fix nitrogen levels in the soil, significantly reducing the need to use artificial fertilisers
  • Minimising soil disturbance which improves the soil  structure and biodiversity

Biodiversity

We are passionate about our environment and habitats on our farm, working closely with Natural England on their Country Side Stewardship Schemes

Under this scheme, we plant and maintain a wide variety of habitats such as:

  • Pollen mixes to support bees, butterflies and other insects
  • Wild bird mixes to support our farmland birds in the Winter months
  • Creating Buffer strips by leaving grass strips round the edge of our fields , providing habitats for our farmland animals
  • Managing our hedgerows to create and maintain habitats

Solar Power

In 2024, we installed an acre of solar panels, allowing us to produce 80% of our energy needs and reduce our CO2 emissions by 47 tonnes annually. These panels are situated on land unsuitable for arable farming, which still serves as grazing space for our sheep. They find the panels make a great shelter! This initiative maximizes the use of our land while significantly advancing our sustainability goals.

Carbon Footprint

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through a range of sustainable practices. By producing fodder for our cows on-site and using their fresh milk in our ice cream, we minimize food miles and ensure top-quality ingredients. Our direct to customer delivery, energy-efficient production equipment, and solar panels, which provide 80% of our electricity from green sources, all contribute to our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

In the Community

We believe that all businesses should benefit people and communities.

  • Donating free Ice Creams to Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre
  • We teach thousands of school children about food and farming, including some free school visits
  • Gifting Christmas Experiences to vulnerable children
  • Each year, we welcome thousands of children to the farm, offering lessons on food and farming, with some visits provided at no cost

Reducing Plastics

We’ve made the switch to biodegradable and recyclable ice cream tubs and spoons to significantly reduce our plastic usage and environmental impact. By choosing these sustainable alternatives, we’re cutting down on thousands of kilograms of plastic waste each year. This commitment reflects our dedication to protecting the planet while ensuring that every aspect of our production aligns with our environmental values, offering you delicious ice cream with a clear conscience.
